Are you sure that there is no menu item? It just uses the debian menu sys

It doesn't crash here. It is a vanilla maverick installation on i386.
What have you exactly done to make it crash? Just open it doesn't seem
to be the thing. Maybe you have some skin or something like that
installed for your gtk/gnome?
