Come on this is clearly a blocker. Think about when Jo Average want to
check out ubuntu. He is a gamer and have therefor a 8800. Since he is
not broke he also have a core2 or amd 64. So what happend when he tries
out the new cool 64 ubuntu edition? Black screen. "Crappy linu
Still no fix in amd_64 package. I just reinstalled (K)Ubuntu last night
and I had to google my way to a workaround for this. Me and my 8800 GS.
This should have been fixed before release.

I think the problem is that the "nv" driver does not support the 8800
series. (I have the same problem), although the vesa driver does. The
vesa drivers do some funny things like some crashes and lockups. Also it
don't support high resolutions, eg 1680x1050 like my screen
Currently there is _none_
Just forgot that I found out that the livecd for dapper works, so I
installed that and upgraded to edgy and later to feisty from there.

I tried to install edgy on my new computer with no luck. Dapper worked
fine, but when I upgradet to edgy it startet to hang at bootup. I found
out that the 2.6.17-386 kernel worked fine, while the generic just crash

I've found that this also affects 2.6.15-generic and 2.6.17-server.
but when I compiled my own kernel (2.6.20-rc5) using the -386 config, but
changing arch and including SMP support (and some minor other options) The
computer booted.
