Can now confirm that this is still a problem in Intrepid - I upgraded,
and it's still borked.
In fact, the situation is worse now, because I can no longer get Brasero
to write to a blank DVD either! SO I currently have no way to back up.

This may be bogus, because I may have misunderstood what the issues are
here -- I came looking for an answer for my XPS M1330, where the
multimedia volume controls stopped working.
Anyway, I checked the Sound Preferences and changed Default Mixer Tracks

I tried Matthias' implementation of the patch. Doesn't work for me.
Tried it through nm and also by starting from the command line.

I am getting this problem with 8.10RC (on Dell XPS M1330).
Was working fine on 8.04 (after I ticked the Disable dead peer
detection). Now that option appears to make no difference. Here's the
log:

'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc'
... also tried uninstalling latest vpnc and installed Chris' version
instead. Made no difference.

I'm getting a similar thing. See also
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vpnc/+bug/96427 which seems to
describe the problem.
In my case, the timeout is more like 30 seconds - just enough time to
login.
My syslog shows

Probably should have mentioned I'm starting vpn through network manager.
Could nm be the problem?

I've now confirmed that it's vpnc rather than nm - starting vpnc from
terminal with or without --dpd-idle 0 still times out after 30 seconds.
Hope someone can fix this before intrepid release. :-(

I'm not entirely sure if it's a time-out/disconnection problem, or just
