Ok, I managed to reproduce your issue, you have to wait for a while
though before it appears (10s or so here).
Reading the HTTP packets captured, it's the anti-phishing protection of Firefox
that's contacting Google.
The browser seems to ask Google to send an updated version of the anti-phishing

In karmic when LOCAL_APPS_MENU is set to True, you get a shutdown and restart
entry in your menu doing it correctly.
You don't actually need to call the init scripts on the thin client as
everything is in RAM, simply cutting the power is enough.

When the nvidia driver is installed on the server, libGL and a few other files

BIOS that the manufacturer made (saw quite a few of these) or some xorg
intel driver bug.

There is no such thing as a LTSP protocol, LTSP is based on regular X11
which is the same protocol that all your local softwares are using on
your computer.
The problem you are describing can't happen with X11 as it's never
sending actual part of the screen but rather X11 events and bitmaps just

and lack of reconnection from the thin client, that usually happens when
something is wrong with the network controller or the network itself
/home/ is mounted using sshfs, only the user's home directory

won't be accessible by localapps.

Can't launch
It happened following a change in grub and shim in hirsute and seems to
only hit on initial boot for some reason. We tried a variety of qemu and
edk2 versions so far without finding a clear root cause, but as the
emulator fully crashes (lxc info --show-log NAME will confirm it), qemu
is as good as

I've seen something similar affecting my MAAS setup at home.
In my case, when I hit the grub shell, entering "normal" is enough to
get grub to go back to normal and boot. I don't know if it's the same
issue but if it is, I have no idea why grub wouldn't have done the right
thing in the first place
Just had another one get stuck, took a few screenshots of the prompt,
the output of the commands in the original bug report and the output I'm
getting after running the "normal" command.

I believe between my setup and the other reported in here, it's been
seen on at least 3 different platforms (some HP servers, Gigabyte
servers and OVMF/EDK2 VMs).
Unfortunately, the image used doesn't matter in this case. This is
network booting and MAAS only has a single grub2 binary used for
eve
In this case, LXD was halfway started but stuck in early initialization,
so everything hanging is actually somewhat reasonable.
The service didn't fail but also didn't finish starting, so failing
activate would have potentially caused another attempt making things
worse.
