So far the the upgrade as solved the issue. No "Short read in copy buffer"
issues. I do still see failures when running "check" from the update
manager, but haven't found the log to see what the urls are that are failing
(could be old crud in the sources list...) I'll poke around and respond
later
Running the upgrade now. I'll let you know how it turns out asap.

When I use the keyboard to navigate in the nautilus sidebar, the enter
key does not take me to the desired location. Mouse click works fine,
