This issue has been recurring since at least three Ubuntu releases for
me, and it seems to be related to other similar issues with the hand
cursor not being switched back to arrow.

Hmmm, after some more use the shortcuts are again not working. The only
relevant change was to set System | Preferences | Keyboard | Layout
Options | Compose key position to Caps Lock is Compose, but unsetting it
doesn’t bring make the next/prev track shortcuts work.

for somehow handling this issue; from 1.9 on, `sudo gem install X` that
simply works will be almost crucial.

After investigating this thoroughly, it turned out debian-sys-maint’s
password differed between /etc/mysql/debian.cnt and the database. After
