I've seen this happen on servers that run java webapps; it seems that
high java heap usage (especially when heap size is close to physical
memory size) helps trigger one of aforementioned bugs. Unfortunately, I

I'm using execscript to configure GRUB for serial console. In Karmic
this works fine, but in Lucid the script is being run before GRUB is
installed, and thus cannot modify /boot/grub/menu.lst.

I'd greatly appreciate if this was fixed in 9.10 -- I'm backporting some
packages from Maverick and at the moment git-import-dsc fails to import
.dsc for them. Case in point, daemon 0.6.4-1:

Found in 0.6.4-1 (built on 9.10 from Maverick sources). How to
reproduce:
ssh ... daemon -- sleep 10
ssh should exit immediately, but it doesn't. On remote host, daemon's
PPID is not 1.
I guess that libslack's logic falsely detects that daemon
Another variant of this bug occurs even with both patches applied -- see
recent comments in debbug 592187. Reporter says:
"With 2.6.35-1~experimental.1 and virtio in the guest, 2.6.32-18 in the
host I cannot (yet) trigger the bug."

This is a long shot, but try another clocksource (normally kvm-clock).
I've had to disable kvm-clock altogether for another reason, and since
that time "soft lockups" did not happen on 9.10 systems.
