I was working in Ubuntu 8.10. I always download updates asap. Then I saw the
message " a new release 9.04 available, do you want To upgrade ?"
(paraphrased). I answered affirmative and went through the upgrade process.

Yessir! That is the same solution I followed, except I used "System
Monitor" to follow the processes, and kill any offender which
happened at every turn. tedious, but I got it through. Thank you all for
the help.

Install and use "System Monitor". You will find it in System
-->Administration of the Menu Bar. This program will show a real time
view of processes running. It helps here if you have 2 monitors working.
Every time you hit a roadblock in the installation you will notice 2
processes related to OpenO
Please forgive me - I did not wish to invoke your ire. I was frustrated
and kinda got caught in a loop of unsuccessfully trying to install and
sending repetitive bug reports.

I loved your mention of the old tty messages. In 1972 or 1973 I was
introduced to the world of computers while in pharmacy school at U Pitt.
At first we had a teletype, that saved programs on ticker tape (lol)
then we got hot and had the green datapoint monitors. Hot stuff. Ahhh
the old days, good

Maurice - I do not know how to stop the e-mail 'answers' from pouring

Thank-you
Since there were 10 or so updates to OO at the time my machine tried to update,
I ended up keeping system monitor open and killing soffice.bin every time the
next patch was presented. It seemed that open office respawned the dang thing
each time. A pain, but it worked

Do you have "system monitor" installed ?
check your applications bar under system -->(second one down, not preferences)
-->
the file should be there near the package manager

My quick-start Icon appeared on the upper right of my screen, on the

Oddly enough just quitting that did not solve my problem. In a separate
e-mail I described to you what I did eventually find out.

Actually I had a screwier problem that entailed multiple installations of
Ubuntu whose settings and files remained when I re installed - long story.
Suffice it to say that I backed up my data, reformatted Linux partitions, and
installed the 9.10 64 bit I386 works great!
thank you so much for
I have tried to re-install several times. Even re-formatting / partition.
not only does ubiquity crash, it screws up GRUB somehow

Using Live CD I searched the disc and could not find either file.
