Since installing the latest kernel 3.8.0-30 on my Dell XPS 13, I can
only use the screen on lowest dim/brightness. Hardware keys as well as
System Settings have no effect on the dim level.

snapshots everything else.
To trigger the script I added a new service zfs-import-scan.service, and
I adapted the existing zfs-mount.service to include it. This way
additional zpools will be snapshotted right after being imported,

after I had to ran on external USB drives for a while with this machine
when the internal disk failed (long before zfs and this install).

system would never boot without re-importing the pool manually. It was
100% consistent.

After setting ZFS_RPOOL manually:
zpool list . returns "ONLINE"
zpool export exports the pool without any console message.
I'm going to add some printfs to the zfs script to see where the boot
proces goes wrong and get back to you. I'll keep the current initrd for

Ok, pinned it down.
The problem appears to be very simple: when using rootdelay, the
zfs_test_import() function is called which tries to do a readonly "zpool
import" immediately followed by exporting the pool. This import/export
sequence goes to fast for my system (which indeed has low specs).
So
Here are the test results:
- no datasets mounted when it breaks
- A delay of 1 second is not enough: breaks on first try
- Retested with 5 seconds delay: ok
- Retested with new zfs script: notok, again the pool is busy error.
I had a quick look at the script and I found the remaining problem: th

I wrote a small initramfs script to snapshot the zpool when booting off
zfs in Ubuntu. As the pool is not actively used at that moment, it is in
the perfect consistent state to take snapshots. Perhaps this is

Ubuntu 16.04 includes initrd zfs support, but the provided script does
not allow zpools to be imported using the /dev/disk/by-id paths. As a
result, the pool will be imported using "/dev/sdX" device names, which
is not the preferred way.

It is a new install on zfs root. I created the pool using the by-id
names, and during my tests I have exported and re-imported it using the
by-id names as well. As this is a root filesystem, this obviously
happens from within a live environment so if the file got created, it
sure isn't on the targe

cachefile=/etc/zfs/zpool.cache and recreated the initrd using update-
initramfs -c -k all without success.
Tried creating the zpool on the system itself, and then again using the

I confirm this bug and I would like to extend it: it is not limited to
the installer LiveUSB. When using the Dell XPS 13 and booting using

I am definitely booting in EFI, as my laptop does not have a Bios
enabled bootloader installed.
Installation from USB will probably bring you in Bios mode though
meaning you will have to fix the EFI afterwards.

Well this is worse in 11.10. Even proactively unloading the modules make
the laptop freeze. With the 6 month release cycle this issue remains in
place for at least 1,5 years now, which is a lot... I guess I need to
replace the module by an Intel based model to be in the green.

WiFi/Bluetooth (use partnumber 575920-001 for queries), and never had
another issue.

boot. I left 10 seconds between ifdown and ifup to get clear time stamps. No
