I can reproduce on my desktop now. Somehow something is totally b0rked
if you have more than two signals. Try modifying
/etc/gdm/PreSession/Default so that it passes --add-signal=foobar to

I tested on an nvidia with TwinView enabled, 3200x1600, and it seemed to
look fine. I switched from using gdk_screen_get_width() to
gdk_screen_get_monitor_geometry(). This seemed to work for me.

I'm at Boston Gnome Summit this weekend, but I'll look into this as soon
as I'm able to.
I don't remember where our Nautilus patch signals xsplash, and I'm not
all that surprised that it may be signaling from the wrong location.
I'm a bit surprised to hear about the gnome-panel being "barely load
I haven't actually merged that into master yet. I was thinking to
instead write xsplash-gdm.log or xsplash-session.log, but doing it that
way would require parsing command-line parameters before determining
what the log filename is.

I think this is about as good as it's going to get for Karmic. xsplash
startup is really tight on resources as it is, which you probably notice
even in a more typical setup by how the throbber is not completely

falling back to the timeout can you try setting the timeout to a high
enough value to be sure? You can run xsplash --timeout=60 or whatever

Yeah, seems like maybe we're competing for scheduler time with the
desktop as it's loading. Not sure what to do about it yet, but
hopefully we'll get it looking smoother.
