I am still on Karmic and my workaround so far was to train my family to

still see the bug.
(When these two files are added I additionally get a display error: wrong
reddish colors and a seemingly low color depth.)

I have installed three OSes in separate partitions in the following order:
Windows XP, Windows 7 Ubuntu 10.04.
Windows XP is on another hard disk as the other two.
My problem was that Ubuntu's Grub2 detected my Windows XP as "Windows 7"
and could not boot it

I am still at 9.10 (32bit, intel), and I also see this bug (with or
without fast erase).
BTW, I tried to recover the DVDs with Nero on Windows ("full erase"),
but they did not become reusable, although the disk surface is now
homogenous again.

freeze after the burn is started.
