Christopher,
Due to the nature of the failure, I'm afraid that I could only get a
photo, as suggested by the instructions you linked to. If you need more
details, please let me know what.

I tested using 3.4.0-030400rc4-generic and I can confirm that it fails
in the same way as 3.2.0-24-generic.
If I add blacklist=firewire_ohci to the kernel command line, as well as
blacklisting it in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, I can boot
successfully.

Thanks for updating the kernel bug reporting guide
I've bisected it. The change that introduces the failure is:

Christopher,
Yes, that provides a workaround.
Re: needing a bisect, I was able chop it down to 3.1.0-0301rc2 (working)
and 3.1.0-0301rc3 (broken as in the original report). However, I haven't
taken it further due to limited time.

Joseph,
Thanks for the offer. If you have built kernels in the 3.1.0-rc2 to
3.1.0-rc3 interval, great. Otherwise, I can build them -- it just takes
a while on my aging hardware... :) I'll try to do it this week.

Christopher,
One more thing: I was told that the kernel bug-reporting instructions
you referenced in comment #28 are incorrect. (See the initial discussion
linked from the kernel bug.)
What's the best way to get them updated? Should I simply email the page
author, leannogasawara?

Actually *I'm* wrong about the bug reporting instructions being wrong.
They're technically correct, but they seem to imply that one should go
straight to the kernel bugzilla, instead of the kernel mailing lists.
So it might still be useful to emphasise the use of the mailing lists
for bug *reporti
Hi Joseph,
Briefly, the problem manifested on upgrade to Precise, but I tracked the
regression down to 3.1.0-rc3 series. There are a few more details in bug
#981936, comment 29 onwards, including a link to the upstream bugzilla I
raised (incorrectly) before discussion moved to the mailing lists
