What worked for me, besides apropriate mixer capture settings, is adding
the line
options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
at the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
I then needed to reboot.

I've been trying to boot my workstation off of network, the screen goes into
