Actually, I think I misunderstood the bug. Had you installed a previous
libpam_ldap package and ldap-auth-client was installed as a prereq
during an upgrade? If so, ldap.conf should not preexist. I'm pretty
sure this must be a use case I missed, I just need to narrow down
exactly what you are do

If for some reason libvirt fails to delete virbr0 when it is shutdown,
it will neither use the existing bridge nor create a new bridge. This
causes libvirt to not use any bridge and not bring up the 'default'
network.

Starting in Gutsy, libnss-ldap and libpam-ldap will use /etc/ldap.conf
as the upstream author originally intended.
The debconf in now in ldap-auth-config.
dpkg-reconfigure ldap-auth-config reconfigures /etc/ldap.conf.

Many other packages are dependant on libsasl2-2. Removing it would
break your system. You will find that trying to remove any of Ubuntu's
core libraries will have the same result.

This is a problem with gfxboot. Although it would be nice if kvm handled
it instead of dumping core. It has been fixed for Hardy.
The work around is to install with qemu instead of kvm. You can then
boot the image with kvm.

This could cause problems. Even in Windows, they make you specify the
domain. If a username is duplicated, this would cause a login failure
on both client and host, potentially causing the user to be locked out
of the AD account.
At this time, I can't think of a sane way to do this.
