Go into synaptic. Go to Edit>Fix Broken Packages. See if there are any
that needs fixing. If there is, fix them.
sudo apt-get update
Once again clear the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade
Then try the upgrade again. If it fails attach the files again.

back option when aptdaemon is not available. Apparently the issue is

A developer just did a test of this. Unfortunately it was
unreproducible on his machine. It seemed like everything was working
fine. It may be a local error on your machine causing the problem.
