Gutsy is EOL. Please try the latest version of Ubuntu (9.10) which has a
b43 driver instead of the obsolete bcm43xx.

Have you tried using the b43 driver instead of wl? (you need to download
firmware for it separately, or using an ethernet internet connection)
Have you also checked if this bug still appears in latest Ubuntu 9.10?
