I have almost the same problem with an HP tx2510: after suspend,
keyboard and touchpad don't work; if I plug in USB keyboard and mouse,
the system is absolutely usable.

I was able to reproduce it... but it's not a bug.
This is how I reproduced it:
sudo apt-get remove fontypython
sudo apt-get install fontypython & while true; do /usr/bin/fontypython; sleep

You will first see a lot of "No file or directory" errors, then the one
reported.

"i8042.reset" to the /boot/grub/menu.lst, or just at the end of the
kernel line at startup) causes you the problem you mentioned with

I also noticed a strange behaviour (suspend didn't work in edgy and
feisty, and occasionally doesn't under hardy, but what I'm describing
had never happened before Intrepid): if I suspend the PC and then wake
it up by pressing the button, as reported above, I hear the fan but the
screen stays black
