Also, I noticed this only happens on this laptop. I'm burning a live CD

The problem is not with the specific brand of drive, but rather the
block size used by the latest version of usb-creator. This causes
casper-rw file sizes greater that 2GB to fail, as dd won't allow blocks

Correction-The upgrade has broken HAL, GParted, and Firefox even with
the workaround implemented.
I will reinstall Ubuntu on the flash drive and disable updates. I use
this flash drive to run Ubuntu on school computers, due to Windows

Dang. The 2.6.38-9 definitely doesn't fix it for me. It's reproducible
in both Unity and the Ubuntu Classic Desktop. I'm going to try the
2.6.39-1.6 now.

I as well, the test kernel extends the amount of time the machine can
stay alive without freezing, but it still freezes after a few hours of
having the lid closed.
