I did some tests to provide data about this bug - failure of intel mac
MBR boot loaders to restart after ubuntu install.
Used:
Ubuntu parted partition editor in ubuntu 704 and 810.
MacBook2.1 with 80GB disk, assisted by a second external system and efi
bootloader.
1. The /dev/sda sector0 and MBR
The detailed tests in my previous post confirm that the 810 parted is
not updating the MBR with the partition information needed by apple
intel macs, resulting in the bug.
I repeat here my proposed solution, which was at the end.

The same problem here with 810 intrepid xubuntu-desktop on a powerpc64 G5.
thunar file manager closing and disappearing immediately and xfce desktop
manager failing to manage the desktop and hold settings. Fixed by the rebuilt

Ubuntu karmic has < grub-efi_1.96+20090523-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb >, which is up
to SVN grub2 rev 2233 - with the recent Apple Intel revs from Bean and
phcoder, which I have been using, so should be ok, but I will try it and
report in relation to this bug, which I had forgotten. The main outstanding

This bug was fixed for me in hardy with kernel -2.6.24-16-powerpc and now
with -2.6.25-1-powerpc, currently latest binary available at ports.ubuntu.com
for powerpc.
I think it may have been fixed in gutsy.
Note that the bug related to OldWorld macs with scsi.
