Firefox has been crashing (apparently) randomly more and more often,
especially when trying to open new tabs. I am downloading firefox-dbg so
that I may be able to provide a report next time it happens.

I have updated to maxima 5.9.2-2ubuntu2 (dapper-proposed). Both wxmaxima and
xmaxima are now working properly. I tried most of the tests that come with the
package, plus some calculus and plotting comands, with complete success. Thanks
to all that helped!
For the record: Ubuntu 6.06, kernel 2.6.
I have apparently hidden this bug (temporarily) using the workaround suggested
in http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=42873 and mentioned by piero:
Added "acpi=force" to the first kernel line in boot/grub/menu.lst so that it
reads:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-27-686 root=/dev/hd
I have no experience with WinXP, but my Toshiba Tecra8100 is also much
hotter under Ubuntu than its previous Win98 OS. Although this
apparently does not interfere with performance, it's uncomfortable for
the user; I have therefore installed the toshset utilities and keep the
the fan on permanentl
I forgot to say I almost always use my laptop plugged-in; I have not yet
tested it running on batteries under Ubuntu.
