I'm quite not sure this have to ba fixed, as Ubuntu will not use Gnome

It will not be soled for maverick, because maverci's version of UNity
use mutter, wich bring these problems. Natty's version will use Compiz,
and should bring a better compatibility with graphics cards, as compiz
is used since a while in Ubuntu.

I tried with this news drivers :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules , it's a
little bit better, but there are still problems, depending how we select
the sound ( 7.1, 4.0) some times it's still not linear for one or an
other speaker ( front, back...)

Did you try to suppress the key for ubuntu one token (insystem,
preferencies, keys and passphrases (I suppose it's something like that,
I use french language...)) It worked for me :
