Same problem here.
Wherever Compiz is on or not, 3D transitions just crash Impress (and every
other openoffice program open).
CPU: Intel Pentium M 1,8 Ghz
VIdeo Card: Intel GMA950
Ubuntu 32 Bits, 8.10 (intrepid ibex).

Same problem, or at least, it seems so.
Clicking in System -> Quit works well, but the fast-quit applet does not bring
the shutdown window, instead, only panels and desktop freezes, but my keyboard
and mouse are still active.
My loopback is properly configured.
Only changes in Gnome-Panel Config
