I have the exact same problem since my upgrade from edgy (which is most
annoying as I need SMP).

Happens for me too. Fresh install of karmic alpha 6 on brand-new
hardware, so no jaunty kernel was ever installed.
Most annnoying since one needs to reboot to use a USB stick...

Some add-on info : The USB peripherial (usually a key) is sometimes
recognized, and sometimes not. In the latter case, it doesn't show up in
lsusb.
After it is plugged in, mounted, unmounted and plugged out, it never
gets recognized again when plugged back in.
