I had my PC set to DHCP and then disabled DHCP on my router. On boot my
PC obviously could not get an IP.
I right clicked on the networking icon in the top right, and clicked
edit connections. Then I selected my Ethernet port and clicked Edit.
On the IPv4 settings tab I:

I have been playing with John Fremlin's "read-edid". And it looks like
the TV is not responding the the EDID call by the PC. I expect this is
what is causing all the problems!

Unfortunately I cannot use gnome-display-properties as I am faced with a
black screen.
However...I have in the meantime solved the problem with the help of the

Still experiencing this problem without the gnome-power-manager.
It looks like the laptop is getting too hot and turning off at 100
degress C. This is happening even if the laptop is placed on a flat
service in a cool room, even if I am not doing anything processor
intensive.
