My traceback file mentions rhythmbox segfaulted and contains multiple
references to this function: rhythmdb_entry_get_string()
After a quick googling, i found this in the rhythmbox-devel mail

Might this be a clue?
According to the info in http://download2.rapid7.com/r7-0025/ this bug
is a bit more serious & is exploitable. I don't know of any fixed nvidia
binary driver at this time.

I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 7.10 from the DVD build. After running
the new patches, the program offered to do a version upgrade, which I
thought strange because I had only downloaded the DVD a couple of days
ago.

/etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf
did correct the problem.

To answer my own question (again!): no. The directory permissions on
/var/run/console were incorrect. I corrected them (755) and that
resolved the isuse.

To answer my own question: yes, dbus couldn't tell that I was at the console,
due to incorrect permissions on
/var/run/console
It should look like:
