I guess the software must start with a value of zero which then gets
replaced by real data - but that zero gets graphed. So don't start
graphing until you have a real data point.

This happened to me too. I'm pretty sure it's because you have no window
manager running. I set things to run `compiz --replace` at login. The
same thing should work if you want metacity: `metacity --replace`. Put
the command in Systems>Preferences>Startup Applications>Add
