I tried booting with no devices connected to my system (not even a mouse
or keyboard) and got the same results.
Boot #1: Boots then monitor says there is no display
Boot Recovery #1: Boots fine
Boot #2: Boots to desktop then immediately hangs (this time with icons in panel)
Boot Recovery #2 Instan
After replacing all of the firmware files in Trusty with Raring's, it
still crashes. I'm not sure what else could be causing it.

There are some screenshots. I can't get any output from a regular boot
since my monitor then says 'No Display' so I have to use recovery mode
to show the error messages. I reinstalled Ubuntu 14.04 and set those
boot options; and as usual the first time I boot into Ubuntu 13.10/14.04
it works fine.

Now that I think about it, I use the Oibaf PPA on Raring which includes
linux-firmware 1.117 but Raring has always worked fine; so surely it
can't be a firmware bug.

It doesn't happen on Ubuntu 14.04's installation disc.
I'm not 100% certain if it also happens on Ubuntu 13.04.
However, I also cannot get my Sabertooth 990FX to boot into either Ubuntu 13.10
or Ubuntu 14.04 because of this bug:

After reformatting and using the Ubuntu 13.04 Minimal CD, immediately
running sudo sed -i 's/raring/saucy/g' /etc/apt/sources.list and
reinstalling all of my stuff, I have sound in Ubuntu 13.10. Still, I'm
not sure what caused me to lose sound when upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04
to Ubuntu 13.10.

I don't want to restart either because I run a lot of local and remote
x264 encoding in different tty sessions. Killing lightdm and restarting
it is the only way to unhang the GUI. I moved my critical batch encoding
sessions to different tty sessions in case the GUI hangs and I need to
restart ligh
The problem is that I simply don't know. It hangs quite often, in
various situations. Launching steam after steam crashes, opening a web
link inside steam, playing a video in smplayer, playing a video in VLC,
switching through playlist in either, clementine. Anything that invokes
launching a window

I see that if I double click the Unity launcher the entire GUI will
freeze as well.
