Yes that v3.13.0-108.155 kernel build boots up with the expected Ubuntu
splashscreen. Though would not boot up all the way cleanly... went
into busybox.
Received v4.4.0-62 via Xenial updates, so purging off both the
v3.13.0-108.155 and v4.4.0-59 kernel versions.
So yes, somewhere between 3.1
Build 3.16.0-23 has the reported defect. Purged back off.
Next build to evaluate, please...

emails with the change log.
I have tried purging off package apt-listchanges, then reinstalled it.

I got the package situation resolved that was caused due to performing a
14.04->16.04 LTS upgrade.
I removed the following packages:
dnscache-run
daemontools-run
Then reinstalled them from the raw .deb files I had downloaded to the
server.
$sudo dpkg -i daemontools-run_0.76-6ubuntu1_all.deb

the USB HDD is properly attached automatically to a USB2 controller
rather than USB 1.1. I no longer need the script posted in #23 to wake

PLEU 5.0.12 r104815 and the installer still gets hung after it has
ejected the ISO. I know it ejects as VirtualBox flips back from having

I put the former drive back in. It appears to have only one kernel
update older than current, and the USB mouse works fine. Packages on

I just finally upgraded to 10.04.3 x64 edition a few weeks ago.
I had forgotten what I did to generate unique filenames in PDF files.
The default behavior is to still not put the job number in the filename.
I finally found this old bug report. Appears the fix has been already
distributed.

I was able to load a blank hard drive successfully in this same system
with XUbuntu 12.04.1 x64 edition. I did not have to partition the drive
with Ubuntu 9.04 like I had to when loading 10.04 LTS.
I suppose it to be a bug in the specified editions of Linux around the
time of release of 10.04 LTS.
I was able to reproduce these odd behaviors with Xubuntu 12.04 x64.
Therefor it is probably not something Gnome specific as it happens with
Xcfe as well.
I have not installed Virtual Box on this system yet. So that rules out
all VM involvement.

the disk made a partition table which was incompatible with the latest

My trusty main Linux machine, still loaded with Ubuntu 9.04 x86.
Intel DG33BUC motherboard, latest BIOS rev
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8500
So to upgrade, I purchased a new drive:
Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 0F10383 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
3.5" Internal Hard Dri
I am able to reproduce the same results when installing on the same
system the latest Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) x64 from the Desktop /
LiveCD. Updating bug description with the second release name.
Back to trusty Ubuntu 9.04 for the moment I guess. (shrug)

For another opinion I pulled down a copy of:
debian-6.0.3-amd64-netinst.iso
and installed a GUI desktop machine with that. Same thing, system will
not POST with an installation having been done to the HDD.

I had to do:
$ sudo apt-get install python-software-properties
To be able to use the add-apt-repository command listed in #12.
That done, refreshed the package list several times, and am not finding
your updated Samba build you posted for me to test with. I will keep
clawing at the keyboard... O
FYI, I see no Samba packages under here:

How's progress getting this fixed in stable distribution? I just had to
"sudo rm /etc/motd.tail" on Lucid servers again. So I guess doing so is
not a one time manual fix. :-(

Yes the tinydns component of djbdns needs that specific ID.

Very odd indeed! I found a method to get the current kernel build to see
the USB HDD box! The command line program lsusb seems to wake the kernel
up to the fact that a USB HDD box is attached to the server. See the
following:
