Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: ifupdown
This bug applies to Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the Dell utility
biosdevname and the following /etc/udev/rules.d/86-biosdevname.rules
KERNEL=="eth*", ACTION=="add", PROGRAM="/usr/sbin/biosdevname
--policy=all_ethN -i %k", NAME="%c"
This work
On closer examination, this seems to be a pure udev problem.

We are having trouble running Ubuntu 8.04 on Hardware with the new
BCM5716 chipset. Ubuntu boots but fails to recognize any network
devices. It should behave exactly the same as the BCM5709 chipset,

Looking at the ttyX jobs as well as xinetd (a service started by a legacy

I tried to work around this bug by adding the following to
/etc/init/udevtrigger.conf:
pre-start exec udevadm control --max-childs=1
However, it still (sometimes!) doesn't work. And as a matter of fact, I
still see a lot of udevd processes (both with ps and in my logfiles), so
it seems that udeva

Just so there's no confusion, that patch in the RH Bugtracker is for the
5716S (GigE over Fibre), whereas I need the 5716 (GigE over Copper). I
just couldn't find a patch adding exactly that (it probably came with a
new release of the Broadcom driver).
Thanks for looking into it!
