This also affects me, running 14.04 upgraded from 13.
If I open "trash:///" in Nautilus and keep it open in a separate window, the
trash icon on the launcher works. However, the moment I close "trash:///" in
Nautilus, the launcher's trash icon stop working.

I found a workaround but not a fix:
Create a link in home directory called "trash:", pointing to
".local/share/Trash".
