I can confirm this. I updated to karmic and cant compile amarok from
source now =(

I have similar problem with 16.04.
I've tried following kernels
4.4.0-63-generic
4.8.0-36-generic
The only kernel that works is:
4.9.0-040900-generic which I've installed long time ago

The workaround is to switch to upstart by default.
Can be done like this:
Install the upstart-sysv package, which will remove ubuntu-standard and
systemd-sysv (but should not remove anything else -- if it does, yell!),
