fwiw, I only encounter this crash on my MacBook SantaRosa, with the
Intel GMA950 graphics card. I tested it running fine on 8.10 with:
nvidia-glx-177 177.80-0ubuntu2
and
nvidia-glx-173 173.14.12-1-0ubuntu3
on a GeForce 7300go and FX5200 respectively.
All systems appear to have Direct Rendering
I'm encountering the same crash on Intrepid i386.

vlc build in karmic needs recent commits to fix wma decod
This didn't seem to fix the decoding of Sirius Internet Radio for me,
but if you would like to test the patch, 1.0.2 is being built by
launchpad in my ppa (ppa:mernisse/ppa) right now. I have attached the
patch I added to this bug as well. I am building 1.0.4 for Karmic right
now, which includes
linux-image-2.6.34-020634-generic has been working for me as well.
