Yea, though it can be worked around. I think that what I did was drop
to a shell, did 'sudo apt-get install -f' and then going back to the
adept updater and finishing up.

In my case I had unplugged everything, so adding them back as a matter
of plugging everything back in. My patch covers the crashing when that
happens, not the missing devices

Do you mean 1.1.10.1? That is what is currently in hardy. The problem
looks to still be there, in a slightly more refined form. It still
comes down to the open function not doing locking properly in the error
path. New patch attached.
