When installing rubygems1.8 (which is rubygems 1.3.5) on Karmic
"http://gemcutter.org"; is NOT a source of gems by default.
It should be a default source starting from version 1.3.5. This also prevents

While I played a little with the grid plugin compiz crashed. I'm not
sure what I did right before the crash, but I think I moved the window
away from the screen edge. I tried to reproduce the crash for some
minutes without success.

Just noticed that you can reproduce the crash by moving a Java (Swing)
window to the screen edge. It happens shortly after the grid plugin
offers to arrange the window by showing the yellowish box.
The valgrind log looks not very helpful, but I still attached it. I started

I found a way to prevent the kernel from setting the brightness:
"acpi=off" boot option, but that is not what you want to do an a laptop
:-)

When the system is frozen it is enough to kill compiz to break the freeze.
I attached gdb to compiz while frozen, here is the stack:
