Installed Firefox 1.5.0.7 from Dapper Security Updates. Running on an
i686
Firefox did not run at all.
Did a bit of digging and this was the error I discovered.

I was using firefox-bin to get some diagnostics as the script you
mentioned was not loading FF either.
The file does exist on my system.

Just remembered - The mozilla.com download doesn't work either. Tried
the Ubuntu package just to make sure it wasn't something to do with the
download.

Nothing at all. Just the prompt appearing again.
Firefox does not run at all. No hard disk activity I can see.

Can you close this bug please - Found out that it is the self-compiled
style/decoration that I was using that was stopping FF from loading for
some reason.

OK - It seems to be a interaction between displayconfig and Beryl/xgl.
When I tried the above command in my non-beryl/xgl session I have
configured it worked properly.

Without Beryl - Works fine in both the System Settings module and the shell.
With Beryl - Doesn't work in either.

Also not working on a bog-standard PC - None HP Dell etc. Same symptoms
as noted above.
Have 2 physical discs in the computer as a workaround Ive installed Grub
into the MBR of Disc 2 and boot by using the Boot Menu in BIOS as a work
around.
