I had recommended closing this Karmic bug because I cannot prove it's a
regression. However, I have now duplicated the dark webcam behavior on
Karmic with guvcview only, and it's very interesting. The problem can
be demonstrated very simply:
- Start guvcview
- Select the video & files setting ta
I am the submitter of this bug, and it should be closed for now. I have
not been able to reproduce the correct function of the skype .deb file
on Jaunty on the Asus 1000HE, which means this may not be a regression.

I'm not convinced that this is a duplicate of " Bug #868400: Synaptics
touchpad stops working - two syndaemon instances running." since I do
not have two instances running that I can find (ps -ef doesn't show
rting points
for the development version, and outline the steps to build a
package .deb for Ubuntu, I'll try it if I have time.
It will take a while. Polling is working and it isn't a priority
for me right now.

A fix for this issue was just checked into the uvcvideo repository by
Laurent Pinchart. It should be picked up by the V4L maintainer soon.
Laurent indicated it should be in 2.6.36. I was the person who tested
Laurent's change for this camera, and the fix is *very* conservative,
