I am experiencing the same issue with Kate in Lucid. Using
--graphicssystem raster fixes the problem. I also experienced the issue
in Karmic, and possibly Jaunty (can't remember).

Ubuntu comes configured with pulse, pulse should be the default. Without
choosing pulse on Ubuntu the sound becomes choppy and slows the
