I have attached a couple of short videos describing my problem:
The first is from Stellarium version 0.8.2-3, which is the current

I have found the cause and offer an interim solution:
The cause seems to be in the default volume levels assigned by
'alsamixer'. The master volume is set quite high (80%), causing the very
loud system sounds. The 'PCM' and 'Front' levels were also set to 80%
(it seems that this is 80% of the 80%

Confirmed for 8.04 beta. It actually causes my hard disc to make lots of
noise; a bit like the heads are moving backwards and forwards rapidly as
if they're looking for something. Launching from the terminal gives
