I tried to install the 173.14.09 driver for a 9600 GT card on Hardy 64-bit with
EnvyNG 1.1.1.
The process was all right until next reboot, just a black screen. The driver
seemed to be installed in /usr/lib32 and not in /usr/lib64 where it should be.

I'm having problems to keep my system stable.
So to pinpoint the problem I did a fresh install Hardy 8.04 on an old IDE HDD.
Ubuntu still does not detect my graphics card (9600 GT) and I DID NOT install
the Nvidia 173.14.12 driver.
After 15 minutes being almost idle, the GPU
I found a workaround for this bug!
If your disk has already a linux-swap partition, the Live-CD will
automatic mount the existing linux-swap!
By unmounting the swap partition before running the installer
(ubiquity), the install process will find and display all partitions!
To turn off the swap;
Also make sure you don't mount any other partitions during the Live-CD
session!

Indeed Mike, new alsa drivers worked a charm. I still haven't tried anything
else, but sound + internal mic are working perfectly.
I have to turn the Internal Mic Boost almost all the way down because the
recording is too noisy otherwise.

I just tested the Improved Poppler-based pdftops filter and can confirm,
that the spurious lines around the letters are gone (Jaunty, Laserjet
1320). For me, the position of the printout on the page looks ok (also
with duplex printing).

Update: I found a workaround for this bug!
Because my disk has already ext3 and linux-swap partitions, the Live-CD

After upgrading to version 8.10 Alpha6, I found the proprietary Nvidia drivers
173 & 177 included with an update.
The 177 installed without any problems and my card is working flawless except
during booting when I get an error:

I did some additional tests and the results are stunning!
1. Mounting an ISO-file with space(s) in the path, will result in "File
selected is not an ISO", but mounting without spaces in the path, will
mount as expected.
2. Mounting with spaces and "ISO" in the path ( ~/ISO/with
space/image.iso),

I tried editing halt init script but the problem persisted. It is really
annoying and quite dangerous too, as I too put my laptop in the bag thinking
the power off was functioning.
Hopefully DEBIAN 5 is coming out soon and I AM SURE they won't have this

It seemed my graphics card was faulty. I had a GPU meltdown which also blew my
PSU.
The replacement card did not have any issues since I upgraded to Jaunty.
