I got this error tonight during upgrade of my VM from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04
LTS.
I resolved it with removing the file /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/id-cache
The configuration script want to remove the /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d folder
but it is not empty.
