I'm having the exact same problem. Just got my Ubuntu Dell desktop today
and did the upgrade. Now, the upgrade is aborting. It also would not
install openoffice.org-core or update-manager, which I've reported as
separate bugs.

installer spent a lot of time working with a lot of different language
packs. If I'm not mistaken, a CD install of Ubuntu usually deletes those
language packs.

Same problem with a Palm Centro. I have a bit more info: I can see the
Palm in lsusb, but I can't see what device file it's on. Looking in
/dev, I don't have any pilot or ttyUSB* devices.
