The only way to do this in a sane manner is to backport the specific
fixes for the hda driver to hardy. Backporting alsa 1.0.17 to hardy
wholesale will likely cause a world of problems.
I will be looking at this in the coming weeks however.

Not entirely. Pulseaudio still needs alsa to talk to the sound hardware
itself. PulseAudio simply provides a deacent abstraction layer for the
desktop to allow multiple apps to play audio at once, send that audio

Asoundconf has been removed in karmic, in anticipation of the new GNOME
volume control + pulse being more useful, allowing users to more easily
control which sound card is used.

When attempting to load GDM on latest jaunty, xorg either fails to make use of
the Matrox video driver, or the Matrox video driver is for some reason unable
to identify the card in use. The

info.sh? Seems the apport collection couldn't find a sound card, and I
want to see whether the alsa-info script has any more luck.
BTW have you tried rebooting your system to see if anything changes?
