Here is an update to my first posting of the problem:
I have not reinstalled 7.10. I have not attempted to reinstall 8.04.
Sometimes 8.04 will start up properly and other times, I get the
incessant "ata2.00:

Thank you, I will try installing 8.04 using a Live CD -- as soon as I find
enough time (busy work week right now).
The system will boot up if I keep the Live CD version 7.10 in the drive
and choose to boot from the hard drive by selecting F12 on start up. This
starts the upgraded 8.04 Ubuntu (tha
