Desktop is located on your home folder, so in order to access it you first have
to cd to your home. You can do that by just typing cd.
Then, the Desktop folder has a capital D. And folder names are case sensitive,

Your issue is not clear. Did you set the volume on rhythmbox or on system sound
preferences?
I tried to reproduce it following both ways, but I couldn't.

I tried to reproduce you issue but I couldn't.
The first time I tried to open a pps it asked with what application I wanted to
open it. And the suggestion was OpenOffice.org
I marked the check to do the same in the future for this kind of files. And the
next time I opened a pps it opened
