Thanks for your time. Sure enough printer is detected when it is on at
the time the computer is booted. I will look into upgrading to HPLIP.

OK, I ran the dpkg-reconfigure. I am sorry to report that nothing seems
to have changed. The entire printed image is shifted towards the top,
often times cutting off part of the first printed line. Page size is
still being reported as 8.0x10.21in.

Detected Printer. Use a detected printer is selected, but a message in
the box below says no printers detected. The Deskjet is connected and
turned on. Since I am a noob, you can assume that the system is
unchanged from a fresh install. Thanks.

I found these two lines repeated numerous times in my /var/log/user.log

I just upgraded a Dell Dimension 2400 with the 82845g chipset to Karmic.
First reboot after upgrade went fine. Subsequent starts have the
behavior as described above.
