I did an upgrade from jaunty to karmic, and did not hit this problem.
The current version is a bit newer (2.10.1-0ubuntu2). There's nothing
obvious in its preinst script that would indicate failure.
If you can reproduce this, could you run the preinst script with the -x
option so we have a chance

it seems) uses alloca when reading the /etc/hosts file, and does not do
the complicated signal handling magic to handle the case when the stack

There are some other bugs reported about focus stealing in metacity, but
this seems like a new thing: I've asked around and it seems that
prevention of focus stealing worked in releases before 7.10 (gutsy). It
does not seem to work for me at all.
That setting does indeed seem to work better, in that my focus is no
longer stolen all the time. In fact, I rather think it should be the
default setting, but if the metacity maintainer in Ubuntu disagrees,
this bug can be closed.

Michael Vogt told me on IRC that the problem was that I had failed to
properly upgrade to feisty-updates. I don't know why that failed, but
my second try succeeded so it's OK.

I installed the 0.6.3 version and indeed things seem to work better now,
as far as resource usage is concerned at least. It spent a couple of
hours indexing things, and has now stopped. It doesn't index my e-mails
(the setting to do so is turned on), and the stuff that it does index
isn't returning
Today, my laptop still works, although I've had the "gconfd doesn't
start" error at least once today, after updating and rebooting.

to current Gutsy as it exists on the mirrors, I ran into the following
problem.
If I enable "normal" desktop effects, and play back the "Experience

This has happened twice now: I upgraded a desktop machine from Feisty
Kubuntu Desktop i386 to current Gutsy, and burned a data DVD (to a
DVD+RW) with k3b. At the end of the burn, k3b and hald-addon-storage
started to use all CPU, making the machine unusably slow.

And now when I tried it a third time, to see if I can find something in
dmesg, it worked. In between the machine had been powered off. Thus this
might be a hardware dependent fluke.

When testing an upgrade from Kubuntu desktop i386 feisty to gutsy, I got
prompted twice for conffile changes: /etc/kde3/kdm/backgroundrc and
/etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc. I had just installed the machine, and had not
touched either file manually.

I have tried, but failed, to reproduce this reliably, unfortunately.
I don't actually have to click on anything, just using Alt-Tab to go to
