This seems to be fixed in vivid. The steps to test it are.
1 set up a machine with openssh-server and disallow password
authentication. Then set up access using keys.
2. try connecting from the client machine using PCManFM and the URI for
the remote machine: sftp://u...@server.example.org/
PCM
The fix is only for RSA keys and ed25519 keys are not found or accepted.
However, I suspect that the problem is not that of PCManFM but of
another component. That might be bug #1393531

2.5.5168-1 I can make and receive calls on i386. I'm still looking
into whether the AMD64 can actually receive calls, but that would be a

Sorry. I've rolled back. 2.4.4997-1ubuntu1 on AMD64 allows adding an
account and on i386 it won't get past the 'verify certificate' stage
leaving an empty dialog box instead. I can try the i386 version on a
freshly installed system later today if that helps.

every time eog is fed a missing file via the shell, but only via the
shell not the menus.

I can get it to hang/freeze consistently by going to File->OpenFolder
would that be the same thing?
