Silly me... apparently this is caused by firefox not being able to write
its browsing history due to limited disk space in the user-directory.
Freeing up some space resolves the issue.
I would, however, expect Firefox to give me some information about this.

Pedro Villavicencio: Sorry, I can't attempt to reproduce this at the
moment. As a mentioned in the original description, this was related to
8.10, and still seems to be an issue according to Michael Fallows'
report from 2009-02-21.

Removing the nautilus config file and killing all nautilus processes did the
trick here:
rm -vr ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus && killall nautilus
