I had the same problem on feisty today.
After dpkg-reconfigure console-setup
when booting without usplash all was OK, but with usplash it was not.
This is what I found out about that:
(1) /etc/init.d/console-setup does nothing when usplash is running.
(2) /etc/init.d/usplash closes usplash and w

This appears to be fixed in feisty.
(But for console fonts to be set correctly with usplash I had to fix
/etc/init.d/usplash as described in
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/console-data/+bug/69559 )

seems the same bug as
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/console-data/+bug/69559
which I fixed in /etc/init.d/usplash .
I'm using kubuntu here too.

Hi,
I cant reproduce this here.
/etc/init.d/console-setup contains here (on feisty) :
start|force-reload|restart|reload)
if [ -z "$DISPLAY" ] &&
...
elif ! run_by_init; then
log_action_begin_msg "Saving console font and keymap for next boot"
If you would use su without the '-' the environment should be left
intact.

OK I changed
if [ -z "$DISPLAY" ] && ! pidof usplash >/dev/null; then
to
if ! ps -Af | grep -q 'bin/X.* vt$(fgconsole) ' && ! pidof usplash
>/dev/null; then
in
/etc/init.d/console-setup
here. Now it works with su - too.

Ooops - I'm sorry but the above patch does not work as expected, since
grep finds itself allways. Here a fixed version:
Change
if [ -z "$DISPLAY" ] && ! pidof usplash >/dev/null; then
to
if ! ps -Ao comm,command | grep -q "^X.* vt$(fgconsole) " &&
! pidof usplash >/dev/nul
@Colin Watson:
Your change to initramfs seems to do it's job very well - thanks !
But unfortunately usplash breaks it again, so I needed to fix it again here as
soon as usplash is going away.
Please have a look at my patch in #69559:

I confirm this on up to date feisty.
kdm starts usplash when it is terminating.
It should _not_ do that.
That should be done in some init-script like allready sayed here by someone
