I've resorted to manually installing cl-hunchentoot (currently at
version 0.13.0, which is much later than the one currently in the Ubuntu
packages.

Hi Dave, the rabbitmq-server package ships with all plugins since
version 2.7.0. I agree there is no reason to single these two out for
special treatment. I assume these Ubuntu packages predate 2.7.0.

This is not a bug... This is the correct way of handling digital audio
output.
Digitally altering the volume affects does affect sound quality, so when
you use a digital output, you want to output the volume at fullscale,
unmodified.
Altering the volume is then left to your external equipment.

Paweł Drewniak contributed a pata_marvell patch to the kernel list for
this issue. I've been using it for about a week and it works ok for me.
I don't see a noticeable performance penalty to the SATA disks with the
patch in place.
